Yesterday I stumbled across a website called Wandering Educators, an international community of travelling educators. There I found an article about the Abraham Path.
“Abraham’s Path is a long distance walking and travelling route that follows the path that Abraham took some 4000 years ago.”
Joshua N. Weiss MD of the Abraham Path initiative
The path is still in the developmental stage with 350 miles of non contiguous route, that has been developed in Turkey, Jordan, the Palestinian Territories, and Israel. The rational for developing the path is as follows:
“The path is a way of bringing people from around the world to the Middle East to have a unique cultural experience, to meet the local people where they are, and to walk with them side by side in a journey of exploration and mutual understanding”
What jumps out from the article and the short video is the passion for creating intercultural and social relations between the locals and the trekkers. The initiative envisions the walk as a place where “different races encounter each other in a spirit of friendship and hospitality”.
As I was thinking about pursuing ‘passions’ in preparation for this weeks Teleseminar, I was struck by the passion and vision that is contained within this project. In the Video Joshua Weiss talks about the vulnerability that comes with embarking on such a walk. At night they would enter small villages with no where to stay, trusting and relying on a hospitable reaction from the locals, which they received.
For me this was a reminder that in making a decision to pursue a vision and a passion is the first step. The next stage is taking action in order to make it happen – obviously! Often this is the point where people get stuck because at this point as we step out of our comfort zones and experience a sense of vulnerability, fear sets in. Often this vulnerability and fear causes us to retreat to the safety of our comfort zone. Trusting in the hospitality and generosity of others is what can make the difference at this stage and give us the courage to take the leap and action that will move us forward.
